Car Seat Suggestions from Our Pediatricians

  • Texas Law: Children under 8 years old must be in a child car seat or booster seat unless they are 4 feet 9 inches tall.
  • Keep your child rear facing until at least 2 years old. Adjust harness height to be at or below shoulders.
  • Keep your child forward facing in a harness until they reach the maximum harness weight. Adjust harness height to be at or above shoulders.
  • Keep your child in a booster seat until they reach the seat’s maximum height or weight. Booster seats should always be used with a lap and shoulder belt.
  • Tighten harnesses so there is no slack. Place chest clip at armpit level and remove twists and tangles.
  • Install car seat with a locked seatbelt or Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH). Your seat should not move more than one inch in any direction.
  • Most car seats expire after 6 years. Look for the manufacture date on your seat.
  • Keep children in the back seat until 13 years old.

Booster Seat Suggestions from Our Pediatricians

  • Texas Law: Children under 8 years old must be in a child car seat or booster seat unless they are 4 feet 9 inches tall.
  • Booster seats helps protect children who have outgrown car seats but are too small for a seatbelt to fit them correctly.
  • The seatbelt should fit snugly across the child’s shoulder and hips, not their neck and tummy.
  • A booster seat should always be used with a lap and shoulder belt.
  • Do not place the shoulder belt under the child’s arm or behind the child’s back.
  • Keep your child in a booster until they reach the maximum height and weight of the seat.
  • Children over 8 years old may use a seatbelt safely if they pass the Safety Belt Fit Test:
    – The child’s knees should bend at the edge of the seat when they are sitting upright against the vehicle seat back; and
    – The vehicle lap belt should fit across the hips; and
    – The shoulder bet should fit across the shoulder and chest.
  • Keep children in the back seat until they are 13 years old.
