Booster Seat Suggestions from Our Pediatricians
- Texas Law: Children under 8 years old must be in a child car seat or booster seat unless they are 4 feet 9 inches tall.
- Booster seats helps protect children who have outgrown car seats but are too small for a seatbelt to fit them correctly.
- The seatbelt should fit snugly across the child’s shoulder and hips, not their neck and tummy.
- A booster seat should always be used with a lap and shoulder belt.
- Do not place the shoulder belt under the child’s arm or behind the child’s back.
- Keep your child in a booster until they reach the maximum height and weight of the seat.
- Children over 8 years old may use a seatbelt safely if they pass the Safety Belt Fit Test:
– The child’s knees should bend at the edge of the seat when they are sitting upright against the vehicle seat back; and
– The vehicle lap belt should fit across the hips; and
– The shoulder bet should fit across the shoulder and chest. - Keep children in the back seat until they are 13 years old.
